Upgraded BPPC 040 to 060. Just one minor issue...
« on: January 13, 2006, 05:45:57 PM »
Okay, last weekend I swapped the 040 on my BPPC for an 060.

De-soldered 040.
Soldered in many lines of 2.54 pitch connector blocks from local electronics store to create socket (also available at Maplins - part no DC17T.  You`ll need at least 7).
Moved coil below 68k processor to left-hand position.
Moved SMD jumper left of multiplier resistors to bottom position.
Put 68060 into socket.
Powered on and re-flashed with BPPC060update. (This took quite a long time - much longer than normal)
Booted up.

Hooray - my first 060 accelerator!  :-D

Minor problem - Piru`s whichamiga tells me there is no FPU.
IIRC with recent setpatch versionons (I am using v44.38) there is no need for dummy 040 library.
Do I have an LC version?  Or am I missing something?

Hi kas1e

Did you install any additional libraries in LIBS: or just reflash the rom?

Hmmmm... I am disturbed.

I have tried another 060.  Both my CPUs were labelled 68EC060, however the one I am using was bought as a full 060.  The other I can quite believe is probably an EC variant.

Both cpus are showing as LC versions.  Weird.  Have tried installing the libraries you mentioned (from Phase 5 B1260 archive) but is not doing any good.

Also, since the FPU is not available I cannot use Ibrowse without crashes (requires fpu) therefore am on Aweb.

It seems unlikely that any soldering error would result in affecting only the FPU.

I could use a little help here. :-?

@kas1e

Have tried the other 060 with the same results - which made me think is probably a software/libs issue.

Really don`t fancy re-soldering the SMD jumper and the coil again.
Plus - even if the 040 fpu shows up, I don`t know if it will tell me anything about whether the 060 fpu is there or not.

Have handled the 060 with kid gloves and an anti-static wrist-band, as I paid 50GBP fom Amigakit for it.

@Piru

>At least WhichAmiga reads the 68060 processor configuration register directly (PCR). Full 68060 and 68LC060/68EC060 have different bit patterns there.

Is the same also true for the MMU detection?

It seems strange that both chips would be marked EC version, but actually belong to full 060 family.  I ahve heard of full 060s marked as ECs, but not LCs marked as ECs.
They are also from different mask sets (75G59Y and Q2G59Y).

I`d like to be sure the chip is the issue rather than the accelerator before trying to return the CPU for exchange.

PS have looked at checkMMU, but it only seems built for 030 and 040 processors.  If it works on 060s aswelll I`ll give it a try.

Tried checkMMU anyway, and it returned nu MMU - methinks probably not set up to handle 06 MMU detection.

Tried also cpu060 and got the following output:

 System: 68060LC Mask ? Revision 4
 Settings:
 (INST: 1/2 Cache Burst)
 (DATA: Cache Burst)
 (BRANCH: Cache)
 (Superscalar)
 (WriteBuffer)
 (Store/Load Bypass)

 Register:
  CACR=$A080A000
   PCR=$04310403
 BUSCR=$00000000

A bit worried about it not detecting the mask number.  Any ideas folks?

Furthermore:

SYSinfo crashes when doing a speed test
AIBB crashes when evaluating system.

I have the latest flashrom installed (30/03/99) on the PPC, and am currently using powerup kernel (although same happens with Warpup).

Starting to get worried.... :-?

Thanks Paul, that`s just what I needed!!

I was starting to think I`d damaged my BPPC in some bizarre fpu-damaging way.

I`ll look into exchanging my 060 straight away.

Phewww!!!  Big sigh of relief!!

@Piru

Thanks for the info - am certain now that it is the chip, not the board which is at fault.

cpu060 returns PCR value of04310403 (in hex - the first 16 bits in binary translates to 0000010000110001).  If it was a board issue there would be no reason for the cpu to return a PCR value stating it is an LC.  It should have returned 04300101 (translates to 0000010000110000).  I am returning the chip for replacement/refund (hopefully replacement).

In fairness to this thread & Amigakit.com I must point out that it was myself at fault - I did not read the description of the item properly when buying from Amigakit. It was entitled 68060, but the description stated it was an EC version without FPU.

Despite this Amigakit.com has offered to replace the CPU for a same-priced 50MHz full 060.

You just can't fault them - they are the best!

Am also greatly relieved it was not my soldering at fault :-)
