Im currently trying to get my amiga (os3.9)  back online. I have no router however (nor funds to buy one) so instead am trying to use my windows (xp) box as a gateway.
Ive had it set up this way once upon a time before, with the exact same hardware so I know its possible, but Im not great with networking and am a bit lost (my brother helped me last time).

In the process of trying to do this Ive half screwed up my (meticulously, heavily customised) system undoing months of work (dont ask how, all I did was update a few drivers, now Ive lost sound and it refuses to come back... even the ahi drivers that are still there no longer even show up in ahi prefs), so Id be greatly appreciative if something could help something go right for me today.

Im not interested in fixing sound (well I am, but thats not what Im asking for help with), just the network for now.
Also, is crossover cable required when using a gateway nic?

Just so people know, my only internet access is through a prepaid USB internet stick thingamie. Ive another nic in that box and am simply trying to connect the amiga to that.

Please someone help me, Ive had a shocker of a week with all things amiga related and Im ready to set the whole lot of fire, which I know I'll regret.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Woo and/or hoo !!

Since typing this post things have all gone just as smoothly as theyd been going badly over the last few days. Firstly I managed to fix my sound problems (never underestimate the difference a cold reboot or two can make vs. warm reboots :)). After that I went through the motions of setting up a shared internet connection (those I could remember at least) on WinXP, followed by by manual configuration of Genesis prefs.
To my (very pleasant) surprise everything worked more or less first time and my amiga, and myself are now happy as Larry.

It's definately my weak point, but perhaps Im not quite as network illiterate as Id thought  :)
