Woohoo, my new accelerator, but this time with added fun :)
« on: February 18, 2011, 02:42:49 PM »
Not much new to tell here, but I started to get a bit bummed out in the last thread about my nw accelerator, so I thought Id start a new one, this time more consistantly positive  :)
Anyway, long story short, my "new" '040 accelerator arrived a few days ago, I was a happy camper, but then I started having problems transferring anything "useful" to it, so I was stuck with a nice classic amiga but nothing to do on it. Finally I got my transferring data issues sorted, transferred a shedload of stuff onto the drive and am having the absolute blast I should have been having a few days ago  :)

The fastest 680x0 cpu I'd ever had before now in a classic amiga is a 25mhz '040 (68k side of a bppc card), and unless my memory is playing tricks on the, the "new" apollo 1240@40mhz is a lot quicker. My 1st thing I tried when I finally got the system working, and with stuff to play with is AB3D2:TKG, and Im pleasantly surprised at how fast it is. With the turbopatch installed I can play full screen (but shrunk vertically a bout an inch or 2 at top and bottom) quite nicely  :)
Think I'll play no.1 1st though, followed by number 2. TKG is definately a good hardware tester though, which is why I jumped straight onto that  :)
I checked out a few scene demos too. It's amazing what people managed to squeeze ot of the humble ol' 68k cpu + aga. I really enjoyed watching Lapsuus on real hardware rather than Youtube :)

Anyway, I'll leave it at that for now, I have some Amiga stuff to play with (I suspect there's going to be more than a few late nights coming up  :)).
Many thanks to those who sympathised/encouraged/offered various types of help over the last few days when I was frustrated with trying to transfer data to my amiga  :)
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Thanks people  :)

I ended up finding a cheaper 2.5 <-> 3.5 inch ide adaptor, so I used a combination of that, an extrernal usb harddrive bay (accepts 3.5 inch ide drives (or 2.5 inch with the adaptor)) and my amithlon/os3.9 machine. Not completley ideal, but not too cumbersome either. I have a birthday coming up, and Ive already put in some orders with my family for some more amiga gear, so all things going to plan I'll have the amiga as part of my network in a few weeks anyway  :)
