2D games programming
« on: November 27, 2003, 12:36:46 PM »
As a complete hardware neophyte I'm hoping some of you technical chaps may be able to advise me.

I've had a fascination with and passion for games programming ever since I bought my first Amiga but was always too busy/lazy/stupid to actually start doing anything about it. I've recently decided to remedy this but have a number of questions...

1. My area of interest is 2D only. What language would be best for coding the type of fast arcade games once beloved on Classic Amigas (i.e. Turrican etc.), on the new Amigas when they come out? Is assembly still the best language for producing these kinds of effects on modern graphics cards?

2. How do new these new graphics cards compare with the Classic Amiga chipset for 2D arcade games?

3. Does anyone else miss the old style 2D games and would like to see them make a comeback in even a limited form?

And before I'm inundated with posts along the lines of "2D is dead" and "you'll get nowhere fast" please bear in mind that this is as a hobby only. I'm fully aware I'm not going to sit down and code a game of Turrican 2 standards over a long weekend!

Thanks for your help.
