os or no os?
« on: September 01, 2012, 06:52:37 AM »
Just completing repairs on one of my A2000's. Installed Workbench 3.1, and now contemplating re-installing 0S 3.9. I'm also thinking about installing it on my other newer (to me at least!) A2000, which is actually running WB 1.3 from a hard drive. (Got both from eBay, the newest one with the older version of WB was nabbed last week.)

My question is: Do I really need to install 3.9 or any GUI? I had it before, but all I really did was 'look' at it. I had even given it a NIC (X-Surf) for Internet and local network capability, a media player for my network stored media files, a graphics accelerator, and a bunch of other cool stuff. But, again, all I ever really did was look at it, and marvel at the fact that we (my Amiga and I!) were ever even able to do any of that cool stuff at all!

This time, I'm only planning on playing old Amiga games, and not much more than that, MAYBE network (so I can move files back and forth), that's about it, I guess.

So, do I really need a full GUI for that? Is there some cool 'other' GUI out there that I should know about, or consider trying? I wonder...

That's a heck of a system to just play games on.
You might as well just have an A500, and it'd be more compatible.
Swap you? :)

Ha-ha! When I originally built it a few years ago, I was eager for all the bells and whistles, and it was pretty cool, and lots of fun to set up. But now, I don't know...

When I troll the Internet, I see tricked out systems that make me want to fully restore mine, and then sometimes I feel like I just want to play my floppy based games, and that's all. Since I actually have 2 A2000s now, I was thinking of keeping one as floppy-based, and leaving the other one (the one I'm referring to here) with all the goodies intact.

What I'm willing to bet I'll ACTUALLY do is convert BOTH of them to GUI-based systems (The second, newer one has a hard drive, but no CD). As Captain Picard would say, 'In for a penny, in for a pound!'

I totally agree! I had a dog once (beagle) whom it used to amuse me to make him walk on his hind legs - on command! Not very practical for him, but provided endless hours of enjoyment for me, especially when I would send him into another room walking that way just to startle people!

Looks like I'll be installing an OS - on BOTH of them, after all!

Now, the only problem is, which OS?

One machine has kick 3.1, the other still has an earlier version (1.3, I think) but I'm upgrading that one later. My accelerated processor (GVP G-Force 68030) is fast enough - I guess. If its not, I have a much faster accelerator card (detailed in my signature) with more RAM.

I have OS 3.9, but I've already been told that that version is only 3.1 with lots of extra 'stuff' added.

What's the deal with AROS 68k? Why won't it work? :nervous:
