Strange DNS Problem
« on: January 06, 2005, 06:56:53 AM »
Finally got my X-Surf, installed it, and configured it with some difficulty. (For some reason, my key installation files for Genesis were in German, and I couldn't get it to work. Finally had to switch over to Miami.) Anyway, now I'm having a problem with THIS website (www.amiga.org). Basically, I can access .com sites, but not .orgs. (Also, its interesting to note that the WHOIS database does not currently acknowledge or list .orgs, with the result that my own .org site, as well as this one, is either listed as 'available(!), or non-existent). Has anyone else had a problem accessing .orgs with their Amigas? Also, I'm having a lot of issues with IBrowse (don't say it out loud, it sounds silly) and graphics. It can't seem to bring up most of them. I'm currently looking at my configs for that situation, but I could sure use some help with the DNS issue.

Actually, I did. I put in a total of 6 DNS servers, since I have 2 DSL ISPs. I've tried just about everything, but I ain't done yet! Thanks for the help anyway.  :-)

Excellent question! And you know, I did test that. Funny thing, either that doesn't work either, or I put in the wrong IP address for www.amiga.org. Either way, I have a new theory, which I'm about to try out this morning. (Does any of us EVER go to work, or do anything else??). Anyway, here's my theory:

I think the problem is related to how the older browsers (such as AWeb and IBrowse) actually communicate with my router. The fact that I can visit some web sites indicates that there is at least partial communication going on with the DNS servers. However, during installation, Miami was not able to establish a full test link with the router's DNS services, which seems to indicate that communication, is somehow hampered by my router's chosen protocols (set up by me, and recognized by modern browsers). I am going to test this theory now by putting the Amiga into my routers DMZ, effectively by passing all (restrictive) protocols. Then, we shall see...

Try adding 194.109.9.99 as a DNS server.
It's one from a Dutch provider which I believe is available to anyone. (XS4ALL)

Thanks. I'll try it out.
