Didn't the A1000 need to do the kickstart thing first, then boot with a workbench disk after it loaded the kickstart into memory?  It's been probably 15 years since I did that, and then only for a short time, but it sticks in my mind you had to use two different disks to get the thing past the kickstart screen.

Whoops - I missed the part about not getting a prompt :P  I think something like that happened to me too, but I can't remember what it was.  Oh well - I'm not much help!
