I assume that it's dead easy to get a ferry to Sweden from Denmark. Does it cost much? Are they frequent?

There are three ferry lines between Elsinore and Helsingborg: HH-ferries, Scandlines, and Sundsbussarna.
Prices vary, depending if you're going by foot, or by car. Normally, prices are around 35 SEK for foot-passengers and 250 SEK if you have a car.
On a normal weekday, there are seven or eight departures per hour (from both sides). Four of five on nights and weekends.

I'd assume the transport is good in no,se and fi is good, but is it expensive? Would I be better off with coaches, trains or hire car in each country?

Train prices are rediculously high in Sweden. Busses are cheaper, but they're booooring! :)
Depending on the fuel consuption, it's probably cheaper to rent a car. This way you'll see more of the country aswell.
