There must be some kind of logic in them, I have seen very funny things with these USB -> PS/2 connectors. Keyboard (purple) converters don't work with Mice and vice versa. Also I have seen Logitech converters that wouldn't work with *some* micorsoft mice and Microsoft converters not working with *some* logitech mice.
Most striking was my Razor Boomslang mouse, it will only work with the supplied converter, not with a logitech or microsoft one.....
