probably does setpatch, crashes and reboots.
You may have answered your own question. Try a
setpatch NOROMUPDATES
[edit] or is it SKIPROMUPDATES ? I forget the keyword, anyhow, use the command to run setpatch without applying the update patch, and see if that helps.

If that doesn't help, you should probably double-check your SCSI chain and termination. IIRC, the CSPPC SCSI liked to be in the middle of the SCSI chain, with active termination at both ends.
Those would be my first two guesses, at least. Of course, I've never owned a CSPPC of my own. Only helped install/configure a friend's.
