I think the ".10 gauge from 20 feet" part is what he was considering stupid. Some lead might ricochet back at the shooter, rather than cleanly penetrating the drive.
As for me, the only drive I had fail I disected. Made the platters into a little decoration to warn my other equipment what would happen to them if they fail me... Not sure where it went, now, though. (shrug)
