I still have yet to hear your masterful definition of a sprite. I really don't see much of a fundamental difference between a processor writing a character into a framebuffer and a piece of dedicated hardware writing into a linebuffer (and don't give me that Amiga's don't use linebuffers line because at the very least the Nyx prototype did). Sure all things being equal, the system with dedicated hardware will have better performance, but I don't see how that makes the two fundamentally different.
