A2000 SCSI CD Problems
« on: April 19, 2005, 12:35:23 PM »
Hey All, thought maybe you could help me with this problem.  I got an A2000HD a couple of weeks ago, and managed to get it working quite well.  I came across a cheap SCSI 4x CD-Rom at a market, and picked it up to add to the system.  I connected it to the internal connector on the A2091 - 150mb Quantum HD on SCSI ID 0, SCSI CD on SCSI ID 3.  Nothing else is connected, and the cable is terminated at the end (8 connector cable).  The system is running WB 2.1 KS 2.05.  No 'bad' software is running that I can see.  I threw the CD-Rom in, it powered up, ran OK, ejected, tried to read, etc.  I installed AmiCDFS 2.4, and eventually got it working.  When I inserted an Audio CD, it came up with the right icon and would play when prompted.  The drive also ejected when told to by the software.  However, whenever I tried to insert a disc I had burnt (Data, burnt audio disks were ok), the SCSI (HD Light) Activity light would come on and the system would hang.  Nothing happened, even when I left it for a few minutes.  So, I uninstalled AmiCDFS and tried AsimCDFS 3.9 and the same occurs.  So, CDDA (audio) disks are fine, including burnt ones, but any other disk (Have not tried any real Amiga disks, can't find the couple I have for my A570) end up hanging the system.  That includes a Mac disk as well.  So, basically I'm at my wits end  :-o .  The drive identifies itself as a 'Matshita' (I'm assuming it's a Matsushita?) Anyway, any suggestions as to what it could be?  The scsi cable?  The drive itself?  The disks?  Should I try burning something from WinUAE?  (I have tried conforming strictly to ISO9660 8+3 format as well) Or is it the software.  Anyway, thanks in advance.  :-)

@ Thomas

Thanks for the reply.  I just booted it up again, and CD0 was already in Storage/Dos Drivers.  I tried putting it in Devs/Dos Drivers and the same thing happened.
However, I had a look at it, and I've come to the conclusion that it is the SCSI controller that hangs, not the computer.  When I put a disc in that is not an audio cd (Have tried several burnt cds in several formats, including ISO9660, Joliet, RockRidge extensions, etc), the scsi activity light comes on, and the scsi controller hangs.  Therefore, as the hd is on the same controller, I can't use the HD or the CD-Rom without a reboot.  The computer itself is alright, I can put a disk in and it reads it, and I can browse the disk even while the scsi led is permanently on.  I can also reset WB, and other things that don't need to access the HD.  This leads me to believe that either
1) The A2091 is having problems with it or
2) The CD-Rom is stuffing up the A2091.
I do have another A2091 sitting here, but they've both got 6.6 roms, so I doubt there'd really be a difference.
EDIT - Come to think of it, could it be the 6.6 Roms causing the problem?  Pulled this off amiga-hardware.com -

The version 7 ROM fixes the following bugs in the 6.6 ROM
- >1GB HD support
- DMA reselection bug fixed
- disconnect/reconnect performance improved a lot
- Sync messages are handled
- Error handling improved
- Sync problems with Seagate/Syquest fixed
- Removable media recognition fixed
- Slow boot jumper now does a 15 second wait plus 300ms scan

Any other thoughts on the situation, anyone?  :-o  :-?

Alright, I've done some investigation and come to the conclusion that the drive probably does not support reselection.  With that in mind, does anyone know of any way to turn reselection off for a CD drive on an A2091?  I've found a program that's part of the MakeCD archive called "HWGCTRLscsi", but it apparently needs v 39/40 of scsi.device.  I believe WB 2.x doesn't have it.  Anyone have any ideas of how to do either of the following?
1) Turn off reselection on the drive manually or
2) Somehow use 'HWGCTRLscsi' on my existing WB 2.1 install (Is it possible to copy a newer scsi.device over, or will I need to softkick to 3.1?)

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that Thomas.  Yeah, I tried single-session disks as well, with the lead out finalised.  I'll just keep an eye out for a compatible drive.  Thanks again.  :-)
