os4.0 and csppc drives
« on: December 30, 2007, 10:42:50 PM »
Trying to get os4.0 installed and going onto an amiga4000.
I installed it onto a drive onto the internal ide port.
Also connected is a uwscsi drive onto the csppc scsi.
Installed just fine after booting from the 3.x install because the floppy wouldn't boot up (maybe same probelm).
Now it installed just fine but it won't boot up full.
Only If I remove the plug from the uwscsi off the csppc it boots up nicely onto os4.0.
The drive is terminated and provides termpower so that should be ok..
It had always worked well with os3.9 actually.
Settings in csppc early menu are:

only drive 9 on rest off

synchron
reselection on

maprom funtion is off
ram set to 70 Ns.

Help!

Termination should be ok but I will try to find a active terminator to go onto the end off the cable.
Maybe the drive isn't providing the correct termination.
There is a sfs filesystem on the harddisk btw.
Don't know iff this matters as it isn't the boot disk, which is the ide.
Maybe I have got a earlier firmware on the csppc and how can I tell by version cybppc.device?
Which one is compatible anyone?
And where is the installation thread for classic on this forum.
Love to has this nice software going onto my uwscsi.

No I can't seem to get it to go.
It seems very important that harddisk is totally free from strange filesystems.
As soon as there are traces off SFS or PFS uit gives problems it seems.
I degraded my ssytem to ide only so an ide harddisk off 4GB and a ide cdrom.
I booted off the floppy and used mediatoolbox to partition the harddisk.
This with the OS4 template so that should be ok.
After that I formatted the harddisk(quick) and then I installed os4.
If I then try a coldstart it boots up ok till the first erset then it tries to load on stops and gives a very fast red flash on the screen booting stops.
If I boot from the cdrom all is well.
Is the cdrom software also 100 PPC based or is my ppc not too good anymore?
I also cannot get into mediatoolbox again using the scsi.device it freezes on the scan.
It's a 10 GB harddisk on the ide bus which I previously partioned with the same mediatoolbox.

Help!!

I am only using ide disk now with a ide cdrom.
It boots up till first reset and then a tiny bit loading and stops.
If I boot with the harddisk till it stops and the insert the OS4 cdrom and reboot it boots nicely upto OS4.
If I reset again then it boots off the harddisk ok (not always but most off the time).
There is a buster -09 chip on the mobo is that a problem maybe?

I am also checking iff the firmware isn't causing problems off the csppc.
I booted upto os4.0 and did version cybppc.device and got version 52.2 out ..ok?
It freezes almost everytime I ask for the scsi.device in mediatoolbox.
Just wanted to check the fastfilesystem in the RDB but that is a no go now.

Don't want to open a new forum so sorry for reply to myself.
I found out why it doesn't want to boot OS4.0.
The problem is the ppc soldering..I think.
The 060 already has been fixed by amigacenter and that part is 100%.
But the ppc side needs a push downwards to boot up.
I know it is not advisable to push against the ppc but as there is no company which can do these repairs I will make a bracket which pushes it down.
Don't think a small force is that bad for the ppc.

@HammerD

So I am not the only one with this problem.
My experience is that as soon it passes the startup after the first reset on booting Os4 it runs nicely without any pressure.
Even when playing .mpeg video with dvplayer.
Guess it is a bad contact which wants more power on startup or something.
