Give it a rest will ya.

This is SDK probably 99.9% identical to the AmigaDE SDK. Those last 0.1% is the demos made by Amiga Inc. It's that simple. The only thing they release are the basic developer tools; compilers, debuggers, documentation, etc. and an enviroment to run the comiled stuff in. It's like having the classic without the WorkBench, and with an SDK. It's useless for the average joe, and can bring more apps to the platform.

Being a cynic, you'd say Tao is covering it's back. Good for them. Afterall, they sell a kernel to anyone prepared to pay for it. Anyone can put an OS ontop of it, including Amiga Inc. Tao's product is in the same gengre as Linux. Linux is also a kernel and a competitor, not an OS. All the three-letter-acronyms and weird names attached to Linux is the OS which is put ontop of Linux itself. KDE for Intent? Why not?

If Tao would go broke the next month Amiga could just use the Linux kernel while they create their own / find another similar sollution to hardware abstraction layers and JIT engine. It would take time and be troublesome, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Tao's bare existance doesn't decide Amiga Incs future.

For god's sake READ the news before you write a doomsday comment!!!
After that READ my previus posting (and ignore the fact that I wrote SDK while meaning ADK).

Intent: Hardware abstraction layer. Meaning among other tings: write game, let others provide support for cool gfx boards.

Elate: Kernel, as in linux, is not the same as an OS. I appologise for mixing up Elate/Intent in past comments. The difference is that the OS is what the user is fiddling with, the Kernel is what the Apps are fiddling with.

SDK: Software Development Kit, allows you to write anything, even system stuff.

ADK Application Development Kit, ONLY allows you to write Apps. Probably apps meant to run using the AmigaDE player under different platforms.

AmigaDE is NOT unable to run on anything else than washingmachines and cellphones. Amiga Inc. often point out that it can ALSO run at such hardware, not only tower/desktop hw.

Besides, Amiga Inc should NOT spend their time adressing people that can't read, or can't remember what they've previusly read. So look for the answers yourselfes, don't sit on your asses complaining about not getting them. Surf to Tao's and Amiga Inc's sites and READ the information there, because it's ALL there. Are anyone of you people adults? Then start acting as such.

Maybe I should use the FryGuy avatar instead...

After re-visiting the Tao site, I see the problem:

Technical section:
"intent® Media System"
"Elate® real-time networked embedded operating system"

Products section:
"intent®, JavaTM Technology Edition"
"intent®, Media Libraries"
"ElateRTM Deterministic Operating System"

sigh...  It seems like I have to apologize for being an assh0le. Sorry.

Tao's information suck and is confusing at best. I recommend that you read the Products Section, and with some amount of fault-tolerance in mind. I think that we have to remember that Amiga Inc. probably picks and choose out the Tao portfolio and leave out what they plan to improve/add themselfes.

A common mistake when dealing with new tecnology is that people tend to classify it with existing terms. Like using the acronyme OS when talking about Linux. Today an OS is a puzzle consisting out of many pieces of modular features. Features that can be added, removed or replaced.

Tao is not going away overnight, nor is Amiga Inc. They made friends in the big buissness being members of the OCPA. Amiga Inc. f.ex. handles developer support for SHARP zaurus (status: unknown) and that means SHARP (and probably others) have an interest in Amiga Incs survival. Tao is probably even better off since they managed to convince several large handheld manufacturers (also members of the OCPA) to use Elate. It's better being small and a member of the club, than just small.

> If Tao were to go under, Amiga would in fact be dead in the water.

And why is that? Amiga Inc could even resort to .net if things got real bad and they desperately needed a substitute. The point is that the hardware abstraction layer of modern OS'es (that excludes Win) is so powerfull that you could potentially switch kernel with a relatively small effort. Not entirely unlike making a Linux distribution for a previsuly unsupported platform. I think you're stuck in the "good-old-days". Wake up, it's not 1985 anymore. OS'es doesn't work like classic AOS or Win anymore.

And look everybody: some of us can take critisism. Go hack a PHP-nuke driven newsite instead of blaming me for the OS'es evolution.

Thanks for the support from varius people (allthough I was kinda rude). And I agree with Wayne, he shouldn't act as AO's friendly naybourhood Gestapo representative. Alltough that would have eliminated comment like the one I responded to, but I think everybody is entitled to an opinion, even if that opinion is that I shouldn't be allowed to have one (hmm..?). Anyway, again, my appologies if I offended any of the AO regulars. I wish I had access to free fiber 24h a day so I would watch AO formus like a hawk, unfortunately I don't (fortunate for others).
