How many posts?
« on: September 07, 2004, 02:25:45 AM »
How many posts do I need to make before I go from being 'merely curious' to something else?

***BEGINNERS BEWARE. This is not a tutorial! for tutorials you could google "google"***

Google, in case you havn't noticed, is the search engine most internet users use. It operates very differently to other engines which came before it, in that pages are ranked not by keyword matches in your tags, but by the number of other pages which link to them (they use a type of 'bot' known as a spider, which trawls the 'net for links). So even if your page is the OFFICIAL page on your chosen topic, if nobody links to you, your rank will not be high (or indeed you may not be listed @ all!).
So therefore: if you want top rankings for your site, you will need external sites to link to you. Many webmasters will exchange links (i.e. you link to them & they link to you) as long as your topic is relevant to theirs. Some services even offer links in exchange for $$$ (xxxk that!). But by far the easiest way to get external links is to set up your own external links page(s)! It may seem cheeky, but it is a common trick used mainly by porn or warez distributors (that explains the many, many pages which deliver none of the content they promise and are nothing but a list of links to commercial sites).
There are lots of 'free hompage' services available. Just sign up with a handful of these (don't worry if the user agreement prohibits external links, as nobody ever checks anyway!^), link to your real site, and before long your page will be appearing on the first page of matches in google (instead of waaay down the bottom).
Another way you could get links is to post your URL in as many forums as you can. But remember: *NOBODY LIKES A SPAMMER* so... DO NOT post the same message to any old thread, only post in a thread relevant to your site topic (or include your URL in your signature).
One last thing... If you found this article useful, informative, or just plain amusing... LINK TO THIS FILE O.K! AS IT WILL IMPROVE OTHERS CHANCES OF READING IT TOO. good luck.

TIME TRAVEL FOR DUMMIES

When you edit your old forum posts in amiga dot org, the old date and time remains. If you signed up tem years ago you could go back to 1984!

I've been wearing spiked hair on and off for many, many years now. It's just one of many affectations of mine. I colour and sculpt my hair without hair-care products or hairdressers, often with much better results (more vibrant and permanent). Although I hate sheepishly following other peoples fassion, I tell you all this information so you too don't get ripped off by a beautician. Besides, much of it is traditional, passed down by word of mouth from freak to freak for generations.

------

Hair Sculpting Techniques:

1) Fins
The easiest kind of hair sculpture, works best with a mohawk or undercut. Cover your hands with gel, put your hair between your hands and squeeze as you make upward & outward strokes.

2) Spikes
Very similar to fins, but a little harder to get symmetrical. Cover your hands in gel and pull clumps of hair upwards and outwards.

3) Dreads
Big dirty knots. If you have curly hair these will probably form themselves if you don't comb! But for the rest of us they need to be created. One way is to make spikes then let them grow floppy. But to make knots you need to tease the hair. Spend all your spare time rubbing clumps of hair between your hands and they will happen eventually (works best if your hands are sticky).

4) Extensions
To attatch something (like old dreads) to your hair you could either: Tie it in with a knot/dread (very difficult) or glue it down with either 'Strong' or 'Hardcore' hair-gel.

------

Hair-Gel Recepies:

1) Weak (Washes out with rain or sweat)

Ingredients:
   Glycerin-based Soap (the cheap stuff)
   Hot Water

Dissolve glycerin soap in a little hot water. Be careful not to use too much water as you can easily add more, but not take it away. The soap & water solution should be a gloopy mess which sticks easily to your fingers. As the water cools, the mixture will harden, so while it's still luke-warm, use it to sculpt hair into shape. Be careful not go go dancing or walking in the rain if you want your hair to keep it's shape. Washes out in the shower.

2) Strong (Washes out with boiling water)

Ingredients:
   Gelatine (nb: vegans beware)
   Boiling water
   Coloured chalk (optional)
   Microwave oven

Dissolve as much gelatine as you can in boiling water and give it a good stir, for colour you may like to add a little chalk to this solution. This solution will harden very quickly as it cools, so you will either need to be *really* quick with your hair-sculpting, or have a microwave oven handy to keep your mix hot (add a little more boiling water as required). Gelatine by itself dries into a clear rubbery glue, but if you use chalk for colour, it's a bit more like rubber cement. To remove it you will need VERY hot water, a comb and about an hour (or two).

3) Hardcore (never comes out)

Ingredients:
   Superglue or Apoxy Resin
   Disregard for personal safety

I've never actually used this method myself, but it is by far the simplest and most permanent. Just glue your hair into shape. Easy. Exept to remove (use clippers). Apoxy resin is a little more involved than super glue, so if you've never used it before, now (as you sculpt your hair) is not the time to start. Be careful not to get disoriented by the fumes.

------

One last thing to take note of. Hair sculpting can be very messy (nb. the gelatine/chalk mixture is very hard to remove). So do it outside. DO NOT use the bathroom sink if you share a house with others.

It would seem that the more I post my URL in my signature in forums, the better my Google rank.

Google "Punk Disco" and I'm no.9. "Acid Chip" and I'm no.1.

 8-)

now I work on "Hardcore Noise", I'll get it in about another 3000 posts.
