emergency boot
« on: December 12, 2002, 08:57:40 PM »
my amiga 2000 recently developed a HD problem and died. I replaced it with a 1 gig seagate (which had been formatted for PC's).

i never had a chance to make an emergency floppy (OS3.9)

i looked at the yahoo mailing list for os3.5 and tried making a floppy using advice and files from there and aminet.

still not working. the system doesn't even see the HD - i used sysinfo to check the scsi address and there are no conflicts. everything is where it should be.

my FAT95 ZIP reads just fine, but the only floppy i have to boot from is OS2.1 or something.

i've tried everything i can. i hate not having my amiga

sure i have 3.1 roms. that's how i could use OS3.9

but the problem is that booting from a 2.1 floppy doesn't let me use hdtoolbox. i tried. anyway, i usually formated my drive with the software that came with the magnum card (040).

if i could get hdtoolbox working, i'd use it.

Your problem is actually very easy to fix:

If your system has 2.0+ ROMs, you can boot boot off the 2.1 disks and use HDTools with no problem.  The reason HDToolbox is not working is that the scsi TOOL TYPE is incorrectly set.  SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device should be changed to reflect the correct scsi controller.  If your system has a GVP SCSI controller, it would be gvpscsi.device or omniscsi.device (if you have a GURU rom installed).  The original disks simply have scsi.device entered.  If you are not using this controller, it will not find it.  Make sure that the case is entered correctly.. for example, gvpscsi.device, not GVPscsi.device.  Once it finds your drive, sismply partition it and format it.  Then install 3.9.  If you want more e help you can email me offline.
