I had the pleasure of meeting him once at a user group meeting in Riverside, California when he was promoting Brilliance, or True Brillance.  I think he did most of his early artwork on the Amiga with DPaint and would guess that he was what you might refer to as a pixel artist, but he probably used all methods in creating his artwork.

He ran a short animation for us from floppy disk (loaded to RAM I am sure) that combined video capture and pixel art.  It was of him and a crow that flew in a window.  I wish I could find that floppy disk again and find out if it is still readable.
