Single-sided 32mb SIMMS wanted - rare as hens' teeth?
« on: April 11, 2005, 09:20:38 PM »
Chaps, I have been looking around for quite a while now and I still haven't found what I need, which is a pair of 32mb SIMMS, 60ns, but single-sided, to put on my PPC card. I found some on ebay for about $16 and ordered them. They arrived today and I tested them and they don't work. I haven't been able to determine whether they are faulty or simply not of the required type but the bottom line is I tested them in various combinations on my PPC card and my DKB card and they don't work.
Soooo after a long time with fruitless searches on the net and ebay I am beginning to think these are difficult to find. If you have a pair of these and are willing to sell, let me know because there's no reason why I should let my PPC card continue to have 96mb when it can have 128mb.

Edit: the reason I want single-sided is because a double-sided SIMM won't fit because of the crystal oscillator next to the last SIMM socket. As it is, a single-sided SIMM such as the 16mb one that I have currently installed, almost rests on the oscillator.

@ Matt

No problem, I understand fully why you're battling to get them. They just seem to be a rare item, I don't think you are letting me down.

Ja, it is because of the oscillator. A single-sided SIMM already almost touches it (less than 1mm clearance), so unless the double-sided SIMM has its modules embedded flush with the PCB it is not going to fit.

Edit: and I was too late spotting your edit that says you were late spotting my edit  :-P

@ Vince

I suspect I would need a matching pair though for the paired addressing. But I'm no expert. Anyone know whether I can have a SS SIMM in the cramped slot and a DS SIMM in the other slot, if they are both FPM and 60ns? If I can do that with no performance penalty I would be keen to buy your SIMM, Vince.

I think my second oscillator sits a lot higher than yours. This picture hints at the difference:
tall

I wonder if i can get a right-angled adapter if all else fails (just my luck the adapter will be angled the other way)

No, I don't want to bring a soldering-iron anywhere near my PPC board....I bought it second hand with everything as you see it in the pic. I don't know what oscillators were originally provided with the card, but it works fine and I won't meddle with it. I already had a bad experience with spacers, I don't want to push my luck.

It seems the SIMM adapters I remember are no longer to be found, but I remember them being similar to this but without the test circuitry and much smaller. Looks like I will have to find a single-sided SIMM.

"...probably wouldnt help anyway as they are as tall as a house..."

--------------------------------------------------------

Tall doesn't matter because I have cut the drive chassis cross-bar. But I suspect if I wanted to go the 64mb route, they wouldn't have to be single-sided since I would be using only 2 slots anyway ;)

@ Acill

Thanks for offering, but I really do need single-sided. There is just no clearance for double-sided. I have spare 32mb double-sided, of various types, and not one will fit.

@ Framiga

Aha, once again your knowledge is very useful, as the ones I ordered from ebay are EDO. One is recognised as 16mb and the other is probably faulty because it crashes the machine.

@ Star69

Thanks for the offer of the 16mb SIMMS but I have those currently installed, which gives me 96mb in total on the board. (I have a pair of SS 16mb and a pair of DS 32mb)

@ Vince

Those prices from Power Computing are quite steep.

Well, folks, despite my solemn statement that I wouldn't mess with my PPC card, I gave up last night after trying several different single-sided SIMMS and having no success with them - not even on my DKB3128 board. So, I took the PPC card out and looked at it for a long time. Then I turned it over and looked at it for a long time. Slowly the little tendrils of adventure manifested themselves as a slight curling of my lip and a gleam in my eye. I forgot all about the trouble I had with the spacers. I forgot that X-ray + soldering iron = potassium permanganate + glycerin. Ja, my friends, I forgot my station in life and I took a soldering iron to my PPC board...

...and I now have an 060 oscillator that sits a lot lower than it used to. In fact it sits low enough for me to use double-sided SIMMS in all my banks. The nice thing though, is that I didn't screw up my board. Many of you would say 'pah' and shrug as if I had announced I had successfully farted without soiling myself. Nevertheless I am pleased to say my Miggy has all the RAM it is entitled to: 256 + 16 + 2.  :-)

Now...out of curiosity...is it just bad luck that no 32mb single-sided SIMM has ever worked on my PPC card or on my DKB board? Do I have to phone Scully and Mulder? Or is this universal? Does anybody here use 32mb single-sided SIMMS on a Phase 5 Cyberstorm PPC or a DKB3128 board?  :-?

Edit: I blame X56 for corrupting me at every turn  :-P

@ BadBigBen

Thanks for the offer anyway, my good man. I appreciate it, but my problem is now solved. (Thanks also to Vince who offered me a SIMM earlier).
