I got mine in the mail today, and the USB Serial adapter had arrived earlier in the week along with my mini 8Gb USB stick.
I did not feel like waiting on my headers to arrive, so I did a quick and dirty soldering job using an old wire that I cut into bits and soldered directly to the connectors on the Gotek and the USB serial adapter. Aside of issues getting the drivers recognized (I used alternative drivers than those listed in guide) all went well and without a hitch. After removing the original firmware, I only had to unplug and replug the USB Serial device into the sytem once in order to get it to flash with the new firmware.
I've not gone about modding my case and I don't know if I will any time soon as I intended to buy this as a means to install Work Bench to a hard drive, without needing a working floppy drive, not to mention working floppies around to do so.
The upside is that I do not have to wait on a new firmware that supports multiple drives, as this is already capable of doing that and more in it's own way.
You can configure it to be able to cycle through 999 disk images currently, and you do not have to reset the Amiga to use each floppy image. I.E. you can boot off your WB 3.1 install floppy, begin your installation, then simply push a button on the Gotek to switch to the next floppy as needed and it will do your bidding (so long as it doesn't fail to read), and the Amiga will respond as if a new floppy had been put in drive DF0:.
If you want to use this, but boot off your hard drive, I imagine that you could install this as an external floppy drive in an old Amiga floppy drive caddy. On the other hand if you have this installed internally, you can create a blank ADF and boot off that and the Amiga will continue to boot off your HD as usual and you can acess all 999 of your disk images.
Honestly, this was a worth while investment. Once my headers come in, I will install them into the Gotek propper. As the firmware begins to mature to the point where it hopefully supports nearly every feature we want, and every floppy image out there, then I think I would not mind ordering a batch of these (should I get my new job), flashing them all and reselling them to people who are overwhelmed by the simple soldering and flashing process. Seriously, if I can do it, ANYONE can do it.
