Bounties for Games?
« on: November 12, 2010, 10:02:39 PM »
I realize Game are really not a priority for the Amiga community, but they certainly are fun! Besides, with the right games ported, that can open up the doors for the non-coding segment of the community to give back in the form of game mods.

So here are my thoughts: I'd really love to see Odamex ported to MorphOS and what ever Amiga based OS will handle it. I know it uses the SDL library and has been ported to PPC Linux, so it should not be much trouble. With it we would have an enhanced port of the DOOM source code that is very network friendly and adds a ton of features that were not available in standard DOOM as ID Software left it, I.E. Jumping, Free Look, fully customizable keys, Wind Currents, Iced Surfaces, Fog, Protective Drones, DeHacked, Bex, Conveyor belts, Translucent walls, more key support, etc. etc. etc. Not nearly as feature rich as GzDOOM, but certainly enough to take DOOM to the next level. And again I must emphasize that this port was created with Networking in mind. That means more Co-Op, Death Match, Capture the Flag goodness!

Now, the thing is that coding and porting takes time and I'm sure people are already busy porting the things that they find useful or of interest otherwise this would have been ported already. So I'm asking the community here,"do you think it would be idiotic for me to try to raise a bounty for a project such as this, the 3DO emulator, a PSX emulator with full Joypad support, or other gaming related ports? As I'm more than ready to law down $200 to get the motivation started."

Dani: I'm glad to see you've taken interest in writing/porting for MorphOS! I had considered making a Star Wars (yes everything with me is Star Wars) based game for BOR at one time, but never began work on it as I'm already pretty far behind my intended schedule with my Star Wars total conversion for Odamex. As for Avatar, that looks a lot like Dungeon Master! I can't wait! That would sit nicely on my hard drive next to Exult! :)
Would you believe someone is actually writing a Dungeon Master clone for Atari 8-bit computers with 1Mb or RAM? :)

Anyhow, I'm sure you can see my angle here and why I am so Odamex centric. I wanna bring my own Star Wars vision to the Amiga!!! ;)
My project used to be directed at PrBOOM, but once I realized that Odamex basically was PrBOOM, but with Jumping, Looking, and Advanced Networking support, I just had to switch my focus all together! I don't think there is a more finely polished project that is more deserving of a port to MorphOS/AROS than the Odamex source enhancement project. Mind you GzDOOM brings Advanced Scripting, 3D Models, and MANY MANY MANY other modern gaming features to the table, but that would more than likely be a terribly troublesome port, once I'm sure I can not afford! Besides you need a pretty hefty graphics card to get all you can out of that engine. It's crazy the things they do with DOOM.

As for existing projects on MorphOS, I'd love to see the PSX emu receive and update with proper joypad support as I've STILL not figured out a way to successfully assign my directional pad movements to keys on the keyboard, which is the only thing keeping me from enjoying Playstation games right now. :/

commodorejohn: care to tell us more about this engine?
