Depends how much armour the enemy is expected to wear, and how skilled you would be in using it. A sword is great for skilled fighters but not much good against armour. Axe is the same but better against chain mail. Some blunt force object like a mace or warhammer doesn't need a lot of skill and best against men in heavy armour.

Jonopike trying to kill some viking in heavy chain mail with two little swords (because big ones are two heavy for one hand) - that would be funny. :)

My 1200s history is a bit fuzzy, but I don't remember AK-47s being common then. But if the NRA ever invent time travel, who knows. AK-47s for everyone and their kids! Make AD 1200 Europe a safer and freer place!
