This is probably really obvious, but you didn't mention it - is the chain actively terminated?

The termination jumper activates the inbuilt passive termination in the drive. You cannot and must not use passive termination with a BPPC - it says so very clearly in the manual. You must get an active terminator and plug it into your chain, then turn off all passive termination. I don't know if this will fix the HD problem but you should seriously avoid passive termination for the sake of your SCSI controller and drives.
