Bring the whole thing down and build an even bigger one, a huge array of telescopic mirrors and lenses. It'll only cost about 500 billion dollars or so. You may think that's a lot, but it's nothing if we stop fighting feckin' useless wars. The price of the Iraq war would build a pretty good telescope, and the taxpayers wouldn't even notice. Apart from the dumb ones who only think taxes aren't wasted if they're spent on goosestepping morons and bombs.

Well, why not? It's unfair to let the US taxpayer bear the burden of all of space exploration. Let the EU and the ESA pay for half, or get China and Russia in on the deal as well. The acumen would be new materials and devices invented while exploiting space.
