My father served in the 45th in the Korean War, all his uniforms had the Thunderbird patch

To the victors go the spoils, of course. The German army knew its stuff when it came to warfare, the Americans just nicked the technology (or rediscovered it, even).

The best military equipment is always copied.

The german helment is the best design, offering protection without restricting movement. That's why present designs mimic it. In the 1930-40's era, Germany was the only country that could mass produce the shape. The American compromise in WWII was the bowl shape. When the US Army switched to the Kevlar helment which could be made in any shape, studies showed the german shape was still the best design for a military helment.

They spent a lot of time on the design, and money providing the uniforms to their army, because of the psychological intimidation factor and symbolism.

Still provokes very strong emotions today.
