If I were you I would try to debate the issue again with your wife. I'm sure there can be an alternative
I'm having the same discussions sometimes and I got the answer for you (depending on your habbits though)
Tell her you'll buy a huge closet to put all messy looking things in she'll hopefully accept your mess being put out of sight.
(Debate here is always mess against usefulness)
