Amiga 1000 Keyboard
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:19:44 AM »
A question about the Amiga 1000. I have a pinout diagram for the RJ12 keyboard connector on the Amiga 1000 and I'm wondering if;

1. Anyone here has ever modified an Amiga 500 keyboard for use on an Amiga 1000?
2. If I connect the 500s CLK, KBDATA, +5V and GND lines to the Amiga 1000s, will the a500 keyboard function on the a1000? Or is the 1000s keyboard controller significantly different, from that of the 500, as to not allow it to function?

1) Yes.
2) The keyboards are 100% compatible, so as long as you wire everything correctly it will work fine.

Excellent. Thanks for the advice alenppc. :-)

Well, I just got me an Amiga 4000D keyboard from Feebay. I think I'll try and make an adaptor to use this on the 1000.

Just another question. Will the A4000D keyboard function on a CD32 without needing any modification?

I have a A2000/A3000 -> A1000 adapter. Then you just need a PS2->AT(? big plug) adapter. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer but I have already ordered an RJ12 to make an adaptor with. :-)

Where are these RJ## parts listed?  I know the phone line going to the wall has a different RJ## than the handset which happens to be the same as the A1000 KB connector (and usually a cheaper solution).

I've ordered it from Altronics Australia. The part is about 55 cents, though I've ordered an RJ12 to RJ12 cable which is about $4. I don't have any phones to butcher.

I meant where you do look up the ## for a particular device.  For example, what ## is the phone line that connects to the wall (RJ10, RJ11, RJ12, ...)?  What is the ## for the phone handset (RJ10, RJ11, etc.)?  What is the ## for the Atari Mega ST keyboard (RJ10, RJ11, RJ12, ...)?  What is the ## for the PC ethernet connector (RJ10, RJ11...)?

Here in USA, those handset-based phones are pretty much being thrown out so that phones cost less than the wire.  I saw a price for the cable in Office Depot for 9.99 and the phone with the cable was $5 with $5 rebate.

I typed '"amiga 1000" keyboard' into google and the first hit gave me a page with the keyboard connector type and pinouts. Of course, having done a Cables & Connectors unit at college helped me with being able identifying other types. ie Ethernet, etc.

Well at 55 cents per connector or $4 per RJ12 -> RJ12 cable, its still cheaper for me to buy the cable or connector than buy a phone to butcher.

I can't speak to that. I'm going from this F.A.Q.
If it's incorrect, RJ10 connectors and cables are still fairly easy to find. I can get an RJ10 cable for about 5 bucks. Though not as many retailers stock them. Still cheaper than buying a phone and butchering it.

Edit: Scratch that. Found some RJ10s on ebay for $2 per Bag of 100.

I guess they have to fix that FAQ.

Yeah, I sent them an email about it yesterday. Not sure if the site is still being actively maintained but I sent an email anyway.
