Blizzard PPC advice please
« on: November 28, 2003, 11:01:35 AM »
Hi,

I just got myself a Blizzard PPC 040/160Mhz and a BVision quite cheap :-) . I have fitted it in my Eyetech Mk5 tower and it seems to work ok. However I think I need a little help please:

1. I have no fan on the 040 and it gets very hot  8-)  any suggestions on what I can fit in the small space?

2. The PPC heatsink is also very hot and the fan is noisy, any suggestions to a replacement?

3. I am also missing the SVGA cable for the BVision, can some one tell me the pinouts so I can make a new one?

Thanks :-)

I recomend a 486 CPU cooler they sort of fit on the 040. You can find them in junk shops for a pound or two now.

Do you mean just a heatsink or a fan as well?  I have a few old heat sinks but nothing seems to fit, the case gets in the way :-( .

Thanks for the advice!

remove the old ppc fan and insert a bigger one..,

Is it easy to mount a bigger fan in the same place? Would I have to put it on top of the heatsink instead?

I am having trouble finding information on those, do you have a link?

Hmmm, I found a 486 PC in a skip, took it home, took out the fan/heatsink and put it on my 68040 (the plastic clips didn't fit, so I used cable ties to hold it on.)

Just butchered the only 486 we have at work :-) .

It is not to tall so I think it will fit, however it has a raised edge to fit around a 486 cpu. Is an 040 cpu a little bigger?

Anyway, just stick an Athlon heatsink/fan on top of the PPC cooler that should do the job

I wish I could do that, but the side of the case gets in the way :-( .

Is it running at 25, 33 or 40 MHz ? For a 25 MHz 040er it is save to operate without cooling, although it might feel quite hot, the processor is up to take it quite well.

I think its running at 25mhz but I am not sure, seems really hot though.

I'm not sure, if that alone would help, as it was a simple flat ribboncabel that was pinned 1:1. That cable connects the BVision with a small PCB that holds the VGA-connector, AND some eletronics too.

Do'h, that could be a problem then :-( .

Does anyone have a picture of a cable so I could take a look?

Thanks

Try www.amiga-hardware.com

Thanks, but I tried already. They only have info on the card itself not the cable :-( .

(edit) If you can get hold of a multimeter which can check connections and give a beep if connected this is even simpler :). Usually that selection is among the resistance-measurments on the multimeter and is marked with a diode-symbol.

Cool, I have one of those. It is about the only setting I can handle!

I'll have a go later, see what happens :-) .

I've got a Blizzard in my Amiga 1200 Tower case ('040@25Mhz). As for the fan problem, well I mounted a pc cpu fan (pentium one I think) over the Blizzard card

Yep, I think an 040 is about the same size as a Pentium. The problem is that the CPU is next to the side of the tower leaving little room for a heat sink and fan :-( .

Personnally I think my 1200T is going to be religated to the "museum", and I'll buy myself a spanking new G4 AmigaOne when OS 4 comes out. After all I can only hack my 1200 so far!

I was going to do that, but instead I got this Eyetech Mk5 tower. It has space for an A1200 and my A1 board :-)  . No room for Zorro or PCI but this PPC/BVision combo should be quite good :-) .

The schematics for the BVision <-> VGA cable can be found here (the site is German, just go to the "BVision/CVPPC-Anschluß" pragraph).

Thats should do it, thanks!

I'll have to dig out my soldering iron now  :flame:

Managed to make a BVision cable using the pinouts mentioned on this list, looks great. Thanks :-) .

Stuck a pentium heat sink on the 040, however the whole thing still seems to get very hot and it has been a little unstable :-( .

Not tried much, but not managed to get any PPC software working :-( . Is the WapOS 5 from the OS3.9 cd the latest available?

Thanks for the advice so far :-) .

When I first obtained a BlizzardPPC/040 I found that my system would run for around an hour perfectly before intermmitently crashing. I found that the 040 was getting worryingly hot (it's the 25mhz version like yours) so I simp;y installed a cheap fan which blows air onto the entire card - this is currently cable-tie fitted to my highest 5.25" bay and aims directly at the card.

Think i'll have to try that, thanks :-)

Regarding the noisey PPC fan, it's probably bunged up with muck - I take mine out and clean it once a year. Aside from that it should be fine, it's a bit of a hassle to upgrade it, especially since the standard fan will cool it down just fine as long as it's kept clean.

Tried cleaning it, but it still make a racket most of the time. Discovered yesterday that when its making the horrible noise its not actualy blowing much air :-o  . So I need a new PPC fan!

Thanks for everyones advice, I think I have the heat situation under control.

Still having a few software problems though. Wipeout locks after a couple of minutes and I just get a grey screen when I  try Payback :-( .

Is there a site on the net with a Blizzard FAQ or something? In particular I wonder what setpatch I should use? I have also installed a BVision fix thingy that came with Warp3D 5.1, do I really need this?

Thanks :-)
