I haven't tested uploading an avatar, but the newest AWeb beta seems to work nicely in general. Give it a go at least.
Here's a
screenshot I took of amigaworld.net (a suitably complicated site for testing the html engine :-)) - the white squares are due to some issues with the gif datatype, they should of course be transparent.
