Picasso96 screenmode limits (quest for 1680x1050)
« on: February 20, 2006, 06:29:01 AM »
I have ordered a new widescreen LCD to replace the ageing 21" Sun monstrosity (X7121A, which is just an OEM Sony GDM-5010PT Trinitron) on my desk.  It has needed replacing for a while, with a terrible picture until it warms up for about 10 minutes and a rather fuzzy 1600x1200 which is where I prefer to work :-(

Anyway, I want to work on my Amiga at 1680x1050 on this new display and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it.  I have read through this FAQ a little, and downloaded PicassoModeTNG.  I am attempting this on a Voodoo 3 3000 sitting on a Prometheus PCI busboard.  The Voodoo card is well capable of exceeding the resolution I am looking for.  Here are my problems:

* Picasso96Mode resets the horizontal resolution from 1680 to 640 when I attempt to add a new mode to the board.  Best I can do is 1600x1050 (currently running 1600x1200).

* PicassoModeTNG doesn't see the Prometheus card at all.  I also have a Picasso IV installed in the system, and it sees only this board.  I removed the monitor driver for the PIV and then TNG wouldn't even start.  BUT!  This program seems to allow me to create a new 1680x1050 resolution for the PIV.

Is there any way that I can add this mode?  I know that P96 can do it, since I was able to add ridiculous screenmodes to E-UAE by editing sdlgfx.c of the E-UAE source, and this worked properly.  I wanted E-UAE across two displays :-)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot for the help guys.  It looks like zipper's first post was about right.  When I try to create a new mode in Picasso96Mode at 1680x1050, it resets it to 640x1050 when I hit enter to accept/apply the entries.  The limit seems to be 1600, since it does this for values 1601 and up.  The fix turned out to be simple: edit it again!  This made it stick at 1680x1050.  So, it *seems* like this may have addressed the issue.

I was also using the latest version of PicassoModeTNG, and the "not enough memory" error is what I get without the PIV monitor driver installed.  Go figure.

I will update this when the display comes in and I get to try it out :-)  I'll be really happy if it works.

Just for the record, the display is this one.

Hooked the thing up, and started playing with the modes.  After about an hour of trying different settings the result: The Amiga doesn't seem to have a problem doing 1680x1050.  But the display thinks it is 1280x1024, and interpolates 1680x1050 down to that size...cutting off the top 30 or so pixels of the screen in the process.  Hooked the analog input up to the PC,  and 1680x1050 is fine.  The mode I can get on the Voodoo 3 does not quite match up with what is listed as "supported" for 1680x1050 for this display.  Then again...either does 1280x1024 and that works, and looks fantastic.

So, I am working at 1280x1024.  It's a bit smaller than the 1600x1200 I had before but it's *sharp* and looks great.

If anybody has suggestions to get it to work I'm open to it, but I just don't think it's going to happen unfortunately :-/
