For a game pad, I still use the older style Sega Genesis pads. I love 'em, and the three button versions plug right in. These are still available on ebay (and other places) for el cheapo prices.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I understand you can tweak the six button Sega pad and use more buttons. I have not tried this yet, but it has been brought up more than a few times.
The 6 button pads are rarer - and what out for the new Chinese sega 6 button pads. At the very least they cost too much...
