I would use an accelerator. Even an 030 will greatly improve performance! It also makes adding extra RAM easier. Bite the bullet!
3.9 is the newest/best choice. #.5 is OK, but 3.9 is much better
I never tried accessing earlier OS on my A1200, but there are option here too.
