Well, most of the time it is a matter of history.
Swearing is seen as an offense in any sacred book. As a consequence, the one who swears is seen as a raw, rude person who has little education and class.
One remarkable point is the fact that some peoples, especially in small tribes, have "taboo words" not to be used by either men BUT by women, OR women but by men.
And many swear words have historical roots...
