and after awhile teh picture came back on its own, (the CRT "Glow" can be seen from the backside thru the vents.) but its gone out a few times as well.
Ummm - somehow reminds me of an old TV set I once had, where the tube filament was burnt-out.
When I carefully knocked on the tube neck (on the backside of the cathode ray tube) with the isolated handle of a screw driver, I sometimes succeeded to contact the loose ends of the burnt-out tube filament. Then I had a picture again - but just for a while...
That TV set also had that "glitter" effect...
If that should be the case with your monitor, you either have to replace the entire tube, or you could try to find a company that repairs cathode ray tubes. Back in the days there were companies that cut off the end of the tube neck in a vacuum, removed the old electron gun, replaced it with a new one and finally merged the tube neck with the glass socket of the new electron gun again...
