OS 3.9: HD-Toolbox crashing
« on: April 28, 2010, 07:35:12 AM »
I'm a little bit lost, as HD-Toolbox is crashing each time I'm trying to use it for adding some new partitions to my HD on my Amiga4000 PPC with OS 3.9 (BB's I & II).

I have a 160 gB drive attached to the UW-SCSI host adaptor of the CSPPC via ACARD UW-SCSI bridge, which is just approximately half full. But now space on the existing partitions is running out and so I decided to add some new partitions.

I opened HD-Toolbox and immediately got the error-message: "Unit 0: Phase mismatch. ... ". I clicked the error-message away, picked the cyberscsi.device from the HD-Toolbox list. HD-Toolbox started to look for drives, found one on unit 0 LUN something, and continued the search. I waited for about half an hour - but nothing else happened. The system was still ruinning (I could see that from the running WBclock), but as soon as I clicked on any icon - boooom - crash.

So I'm a bit lost now, as I did setup the other partitions with HD-Toolbox some time ago and it worked.

What can be the cause for it failing today???
Does someone have an idea?
 :-?

"Phase mismatch" is usually caused by bad termination (like everything SCSI-related) but it can also be caused by a bad SCSI command. Try another version of HDToolbox, preferably the one you used to prepare the drive. Or use SCSITools from the Cyberstorm SCSI disk.

Good morning Thomas,

I'm using the exactly very same version I used before to set up the existing partitions.
You're right, in the course of my successless attempts to get HD-Toolbox to work there was an error message for an SCSI command that was not or not properly understood - but sorry, I forget the name of the command.
Have to look at it again when I'm back home from work, if you need to know it.

I can use the SCSI Tools for partitioning and formatting a drive? Wasn't aware of that - equally something I will have to check when I'm back home.

Anyway, your help is really appreciated.
All the best,

Dandy

Wow.  An amiga with a 160g hard drive THATS HALF FULL.

Yeah - about 80 gB in roughly 12 years.
Includes tons of downloads, backups of original CDs & disks, photos and AVIs from the digicam, Mp3s, ... - and still collecting.

Have you uncommented the line in Nsd patch config (or whatever it was called) for your cyberscsi.device?

Ok, the right typo is NSDPatch.cfg

IIRC, there's no need to use this NSD patch in combination with the UW-SCSI on the CSPPC.
Harddrives > 80 gB (I think that was the critical limit) are supported out of the box.

And I wouldn't touch SCSI with different tools - for instance P5 tool does some of its own tricks that may cause problems when another tool is used. (think JDow wrote that).

AFAIR I only used HD-Toolbox in the past for this task - that's why I'm so surprised that it magically stopped working.

@thread:
Problem solved - or better: circumvented.

I found an ancient Backup of my A1200 system and the HD-Toolbox from that worked flawlessly.

Unfortunately there`s no "About" in the menue - so I couldn`t find out the version number of that HD-Toolbox to publish it here.

I even cannot tell if the system was OS 3.1 or OS 3.5...

Anyway - thanks to everyone for your help!

EDIT:
I found out the version number of the working HD-Toolbox:
HDToolbox 45.2
