Don't go the Amiga route. One hardware problem and you might as well have spent the money on the mac.
You could get trusty old used drill press, but when it breaks, and you swallow the repair bill, you'll want to kick your self knowing you spent more on that when you could have in the end spent less on a new one with a warranty. (and the new one does more)
