Is there any kickstart relocator/switcher with ribbon cable?
« on: October 25, 2018, 04:37:56 PM »
Hi all.
I have started to test my TF-530 accelerator for my Amiga500. I am having a bit of an kickstart issue with this, as I have no room/space for an Cloanto dual-1.3/3.1 kickstart, as this is sitting too high. If I mount a single chip standard original kickrom, then there is space. The issue is the CPU relocator. An angeled one, that goes over the corner of the dual kickstart chip it self. If I mount the relocator halfway down into the socket, then it will rest on top of that corner of the kickstart dual-rom. And then the accelerator will loose connection in the CPU socket and become unstable. If I mount it with 4 spacers (two on each pin-row) directly in the CPU socket, and not using the CPU relocator, then I can use the dual kickrom switcher. Yet I will not be able to close the case or even have the keyboard installed, as the IDE port will be in the way.

So... I am after some sort of device, that will move the kickstart a bit to the side. More specifically a device with an ribbon cable, as the plug that goes into the Kickstart socket, are lower than an original kickstart chip. If I need to go for an kickstart switcher, to install the kickstart switch into, then I am after a device that are operated by a physical contact and not a device that will need soldering or use a clip or something. It is more a personal preferance, as I like physical switches and contact's.

I saw one on ebay for a couple of weeks ago, yet it is nowere to be found, so I guess it was sold or waiting to be relisted or something.
To clearify what exactly I am after. Then it is something a bit like this below... Something that moves the kickstart rom slightly to the side.

Or something like this below....

I fear that it will not work, as the chip that I will mount on top of it, will be in the way of the CPU relocator yet again. The other thing that I am a bit worried about, is that I have an Gary adaptor installed in the first place, in order to use 512k as chipram on the 2mb trapdoor mem expander that I have. If only there were an adaptor, that allow me to move the kickstart rom a couple of millimeters to the right and a couple of millimeters down towards the keyboard. That would be what will actually do the trick for me.

Like this one:?

https://www.google.nl/search?q=amigakit+kickstart+switcher&hl=nl&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiIwLPwmqLeAhUEbFAKHfzbBWUQ_AUIDygC&biw=1920&bih=921#imgrc=zAp10wobGg6ozM:&spf=1540491727152

If you want one, then I can sell it to you.

Exactly like that. Except... I do not know if it is manual switching or you switch, using the keyboard.
The plug you mount in the kicrom socket is low enough as far as I can see.
How far up does it raise from the socket, compared to a stock and standard rom chip?
Can I attach something or place a jumper of some sort, in order for the switching mechanism to be disabled?
Personally I am mostly after a socket extender of this kind. You know... Just moving the kickrom chip.

If this is indeed what I am searching for, and the price is right. Then I will buy it.
Though I have no money left this month, I hope it is ok, if we do a deal first thing on the first of next month.

The DKB Multistart II sounds like what you need:

https://www.bigbookofamigahardware.com/bboah/product.aspx?id=672

Is that operated by jumper or physical switch/contact?
As it is an older product, were do I search for one?

It raises almost as high as a normal kickstart Rom and it works with keyboard.

Will it operate with only one rom chip?

Yes, it is possible.

Basically. I can insert my 1.3/3.1 kickrom switcher in socket number one, and it will allways boot that one. If I leave socket number two empty, then it will ignore the keyboard switching command/feature? In other words, make the 3-seconds amiga+amiga+ctrl function invalid or disable the function. If so, then what is your price?

That all said. Then I am thinking about making a simple extender as well. Just to see how they will stack up against each other, and to see how good I am at building electronics my self.  ;D

and

http://www.scuzzscink.com/amiga/scuzzblog_november17/scuzzblogdnovember17_1101.htm

That is exactly the type that I am looking for. Exact same type. Manual switch and ribbon cable.
Do you know if they can be bought somewere? If not, is there any diagram out there, so I can build my own?

I have been looking over my Amiga500 and were the CPU relocator goes over the Kickstart socket and chip.

As far as I can see, I really need that ribbon cable, and as I really only need to have that 1.3/3.1 dual-rom-single-ic installed. Then I have decided to build a relocator my self. So today I have ordered parts on eBay, and if everything goes well, then I will be building 5 kickstart relocators, that can be used with my specific choice of a500 upgrade. If stuff does not go my way, I think I will manage to pull off 3 pieces of relocators. It all depends on how bad I am at messing stuff up when soldering.  ;D

Untill further. Thanks for all the input guys. I really apreciate it, and hopefully I will be able to make this work. If not, I will contact you all for a price on them kickrom switchers.
