New Amiga Games Company needs your help
« on: March 26, 2007, 10:02:36 PM »
Hey guys. I'm starting a new Amiga games company/group, or at least wanting to join one that already exists if there are any around. I want to try and add a bit of professionalism which has been lacking in recent years (or decades).

But first, I need to do a bit of market research. I have created an online survey to find out what kind of games people want to play on their Amigas, and what they would pay for them.

The survey is divided into two pages:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=399343561778

and

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=152143562127

It would be much appreciated if anyone who is interested in seeing new Amiga games produced to fill in the survey honestly, and give us a clue what we need to make for everyone.

Thanks
Amiga user forever.

Thanks everyone for filling in the survey. I'll be writing some follow-up surveys with more tecnical questions to find out what Amiga setups people have soon. I'll be asking questions about graphics cards, sound cards, CPUs and stuff.

The results so far have been very hlpful, they show that the majority of Amiga users understand the capabilities of the machine and the developers, although some have still requested multi-million dollar games like Medal of Honour and World of Warcraft, which, we have to be honest with ourselves, can't and won't happen (unless every PC and Mac on the planet suddenly explodes and people have no choice but to buy Amigas). But anyone is welcome to add a comment at the end of the survey, describin the type of games they want. Who knows, maybe someone out there has the time to create an online 3D world for Amiga users (although porting one of the open-source MMORPGs would probably be a better idea).

Still, so far, the most popular games are Platformers, Point & Click Adventures, and RPGs, followed by 3D Racing.

If anyone has any suggestions for follow-up questions in the next survey, please let me know. I really want to get a broad view of the Amiga gaming market, to help Amiga games developers, and in turn deliver the games people want to play.

Oh yeah, and Lightscribe discs are a possibility to keep costs down, but some CD32s and other CD drives (perhaps the CDTV also) don't read burned discs to well, and they take ages to load sometimes. If a game comes out that doesn't have long loading times, it's possible we might distribute them on Lightscribe discs, but only time will tell.

I'll be looking into CD pressing and manufacturing costs.

Yeah, my next survey is going to be about everyone's hardware specifications, I'll try and get it up and running some time today.

I guess the question about price is a bit broad, it should really say "How much would you pay for a GOOD game, since I wouldn't want to release any crap ones. Still, if it's a good, yet basic game, it'll be cheaper than a good game that had more work put into it.

Any games that we make, I'd like to have as many options as possible. If it's an AGA CD game, I'd like it to run on a standrd CD32, but if you have more RAM or a faster CPU, then it should take advantage of those and add extra features to the game (more sound effects, extra parallax, more animation) and so on.

Plus I'd like to find out if it's possible to make a configuration utility that all our upcoming games can use, so you only have to set it up once, for options like RTG, AHI, USB/PSX controllers and other things. Maybe even an overscan saving preference, so you can centre the game on your screen, and every game after that that we make can use those same overscan settings. It's really annoying when one game is centred, and the net one is aligned to the left bottom corner or something, and diffeent people's displays have different alignments.

The big TV I play my CD32 on for eample, seems to be more aligned to the right, so there's a fat black bar on the left side of most games. I want to fix all this with any new games coming out. And set a lot of standards that our games have to stick to.

Thanks for your input, everyone. We have completed a follow-up survey about hardware specifics, which will help us determine what machines we should be developing for.

You'll find it here - http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=21053586334

Thanks once again to everyone for contributing.
