Hopefully, diversification of operating systems might at least mean that one exploit wouldn't automatically affect 90% of systems in existence. I remember reading an article about top level dns systems that use this approach to ensure that an exploit won't take out the entire dns system. The downside of course is for companies that write software and support hardware. Supporting a diverse OS landscape would cost more. Having one, proprietary, closed operating system completely dominating the computer industry makes it a an easy target.
