So i bit the bullet and opened up the case (15 years old and the warranty seals were still intact) and found the jumper for the display (ntsc and pal). I changed this to ntsc and now it works on my monitor completely in games and workbench, at several resolutions.
Use that opportunity to check the battery as well.. Most batteries have started leaking by now, which sadly has killed quite a few Amigas. :-(
I believe you can get replacement batteries for cheap and it should not require any advanced soldering skills.
