No need to low level format, as normal format is enough and a low format can actually damage your hard disk. All you need to do is partition the HD into smaller partitions using hdtoolbox, then you format the partitions normally afterwards. I think the main problem here is that your parition is more than 4gig? I would follow the suggestion of amikit.
