The Canonical "Amiga.org header Topaz text" poll
« on: May 19, 2009, 12:26:57 AM »
Ok guys,

Time to agree or disagree.  Put up or shut up.

Here's a poll to decide whether the header logo for Amiga.org stays with Topaz font (the defacto Amiga font) or goes with something more modern/traditional such as Georgia (the "AMIGA" logo font).

Since I can never make anyone happy, here's how this will go.

I will post this poll, then stop it around 100 votes (200 if it gets spirited).  If, at the end, there is a CLEAR and DECISIVE victory for one side or the other, say 70%, then the font will follow the direction of the poll results.

If at the end of the voting, there is no clear victor, then phooey on all of you and it'll be dealer's choice.  Keeping in mind I may actually rotate the logo for holidays and such.

Either way, no more kvetching about it.

Deal?

If I could choose, the layout and design of the new amiga.org should be as similar as possible to the old one.
I realize of course that some of you will NEVER be happy until this site looks identical to the antiquated version of what it was.

Frankly and honestly, as a web GUI guy, after the first seven years or so, I got extremely tired of looking at it, as it looked like something built and created nearly a decade ago (which it was).

The new header will change and mutate, but -- with respect to those who can't get past it -- it won't ever be what it was.

There is a reason people tear down 1970's floral wallpaper from their kitchen, and the fact that our "active users" (those people who've logged in in the last 30 days) went up 100+ people in the last week speaks volumes to me.

Change is good.  Sometimes difficult, but good as it keeps people interested.

With 77 votes cast, I'm hoping that you guys can start understanding the point that I'm trying to subtly make.

This poll, as with any change that I can seemingly make, is bound to upset SOMEONE's proverbial apple cart.

Some people want x display.  Some people want Y display.  EVERYONE wants to go back to "the way things were" (which isn't possible).

As such, the best I (or ANY Amiga-oriented site Webmaster) can do with any decision is to try to annoy the fewest people possible.

The change away from "what was", was forced upon us, and yes, I could have stayed with Xoops (with a LOT more work) but frankly, we're doing fine now and will continue to develop forward until things get to where no one even remembers the way things were before.

All it takes is patience, and I apologize for the need but again, not something I wanted to do.

Then again, I'm having more fun with this site now than I have in years.  I just have to figure out a way to upgrade all of my remaining sites to vB now.. :)

Maybe I should just create 6 new themes and rotate them on a daily basis like the BBC.co.uk does?

Black for Mondays, Blue for Wednesdays, Bright Yellow or Orange for Fridays...

:)

Just so's ya know... I didn't create the old header.  I think Meers did (sorry if I'm wrong), so I don't have the old font even if I wanted to use it

Rotation is a fine idea, let's make a calendar. Will anyone draw a logo where a Lemming climbs on the Topaz font? Oh, what's Lemming day, btw :-)?

I love that idea..!

edit: from Wikipedia.com -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemmings_(video_game)

Lemmings Day is February 14th (released Feb 14, 1991)
