MP3 to what?

After reading a few posts about MP3 files taking up CPU power, I have decided to get all my MP3 music files and convert them.
BUT to what? In other words what is the best to convert to and still maintaning some sort of reasonable quality, and using much less CPU power.

Yes I am right now using Linux and  a program called Sound Converter from MP3 to16 bit WAV as an experiment, so I was on the right lines.
But thank you for your advice, its been a heck of a long time since I done any kind of sound file converting on my Amiga.
