Hi, I also use an Apollo MkIII Turbo 40Mhz with 32 meg of fastram, no FPU,  With 3.1 roms and OS3.9.
Never had a problem with it, before installing my Mediator and with the Mediator.

The Blizzard is a better board, but I had not enough money to get one, so I stuck with the Apollo with still no problems.
It is possible it may be ok for you, but there again computers can be funny things at times.
