Tried it with different hard drives?
If you remove all the drives is there similar delay before the "insert disk" screen appears?
Very good advice.
Could be SMART issue with a drive's self test diagnostic taking a while to run, ie impending hard drive failure (Amigas don't report SMART problems as such).

Not quite same thing as a drive validating. Helps if you can plug it into a later (non-Amiga) controller that does support SMART.
