WHDLoad running under Kickstart 1.3
« on: September 06, 2017, 06:13:34 AM »
Hi all, im prepared to take a bit of flak for this one, but...

I know WHDLoad cannot run on the older Kickstart 1.3 and needs 2.0 or above but what is the particular reason a version of WHDLoad cannot run on 1.3 systems? I assume it's using libraries or something that only +2.0 can provide but couldn't there possibly be a way to make a version that runs on 1.3 systems?

Im sure there would be many people out there that would want WHDLoad to run on their older 1.3 machines mainly for nostalgia reasons as with most things Amiga I guess.

Just putting it out there anyway :)

I definitely get that with WHDLoads intention but I think it also works so well not having to mess about with anything floppy drive related and seems to be quicker load times in most situations than loading from floppy or emulated floppy drive.

Many thanks Zipper for the link to Jst, from testing I can see Jst having huge potential! Been playing around with it for an afternoon and had mixed results. Around 50% of WHDLoad games I tried with it worked surprisingly well. I wish this would be further developed as it's super cool loading WHDLoad games from 1.3.

With 2MB Chip and 8MB Fast RAM & WB1.3, games like AnotherWorld, Paradroid 90, Swiv, Rick Dangerous etc come up with errors like unsupported slave and insufficient memory etc. I did get games like Lemmings, Arkanoid, Alienbreed, Micromachines, Exile, Stunt Car Racer and Puzznic for example to work perfectly though.

Unfortunately if Jst runs into an error or any time I quit a game which seems to use the same quit shortcut key as WHDLoad use, I get a guru crash every single time and have to restart the machine. If Jst had more work done to it, it could probably work really well on 1.3 machines.
