Another good way of testing/calibrating video outputs is to use a test pattern generator, such as Barry Walker's one on Aminet:
http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/~aminet/hard/hack/TestCard.lhaWith it you can check convergence, focus, horizontal and vertical sync, frequency response, etc.
Just make sure you do it on a known good monitor :-P
