Agreed, a serial port expansion will offer faster bitrates.
If you have a Zorro capable Amiga, I do have a couple of
Multiface3 I/O cards available. These offer serial speeds up to 115200 baud, see the review on

Otherwise there's the SilverSurfer expansion for the A1200 or cards with a clock port and the VarIO from
Individual Computers.
