I want an Amiga gaming system!
« on: February 05, 2004, 02:43:50 AM »
Hello all,

I am interested in finding and purchasing an Amiga computer, specfically for gaming. I want to get the best and most powerful Amiga system, at least when it comes to games.

So what Amiga model should I get?

What specific features, RAM, drives, etc. should I look for?

Should I just get the system on Ebay or is there a better place?

Lastly where is good place to get some cool games? I am looking for games like Shadow of the Beast or other well done graphically & sound "intensive".

I would really appreciate any info provided. I will never forget when I was 10-13 yrs old,  gawking at my cousins Amiga games & system. It put to shame the computer I had. I would love to relive those days, but with my own system!  :-D

thanks,

Glenn

Thanks for all the quick and helpful suggestions.

I am actually not really into 3d games. What I really love are cool 2d games! Shooters, action adventures, etc.

Cosidering this maybe the A500 would be best. I saw a bunch of new refurbished A500's on ebay.

So if I am looking for cool 2d games what system should I get? An A500?
Do those refurbished A500's on ebay have the features I want/need?

I guess I could do that. Emulation just kinda seems like a half a*% way to go.

So most games won't work on an A500?

O.k so I guess I want an A500.

What's the deal with this A500 that redrumola is selling: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2784781315&category=4598

Does this computer work? If not how much should I expect to pay for a A500?

Does anyone know of any good places to buy good 2D software?

Thanks for the link.

Well now I am getting more and more confused.

I just saw some stuff on the Atari ST, specifically a review of this game for the Amiga called Lionheart. This game looked AWESOME and the article I read mentioned the Atari ST and it taking advantage of some sound features the game has.

I went to ebay and found a  Atari 520 ST 520STFM. How is this compared to an Amiga 500?

Anyway I still am looking at those refurbished "defective" A500's on ebay. If anyone has any opinions on those please let me know.

I am pretty handy with hardware and built all my own personal computers so modding an Amiga, if necessary, shouldn't be heard.

Anyway after looking at this one page,  http://www.cus.org.uk/~alexh/games/games.html

I am DYING to get an Amiga or and Atari ST?

Those Thalion brand games look beautiful! Those are the types of games that I want to play on my future Amiga system, colorful, animated 2D stuff!

Wow this forum rocks! I am very impressed at the amount of helpful responses I got!

First off I live in the US and would definitely want an Amiga capable of playing PAL and NTSC games. Considering this what should be my plan?

Also loading time is something I definitely would rather not have to deal with BUT I don't mind some loading time. To be honest I dont feel like spending even close to $500 on a system. Would this then rule out a A1200?

Lastly why would I need a monitor? Can't I just hook up any Amiga to my current PC 19"?

Thanks redrumloa,

Sounds like the A3000 would be the way to go.

Are there any specifc mods or features I would want to look for before buying an A3000?

Any notorious problems with them I should watch out for?

I could only find one available on ebay, and it supposedly has some distorted/fuzzy display problems. Either way it didn't look like a well kept cpu.
Are these hard to find on ebay? Any where else I could look?

One final thing. Where would I look for legit versions of Thalion brand games/shooters?

thanks again for the help,

Glenn

Interesting ideas leirbag.

So you are saying an Amiga 1200 will use Sega Genesis controllers? I have a few of these, one regular 3 button, a JVC Xeye model and a Sega 6 button. Do these just plug into the ports on the bag of the 1200?

Do you have a Amiga32? That system looks interesting. To bad it can't run any of those old disk games, or can it?

Here are some more big questions:

Can I use the 1200 with my 19" monitor?

I saw 2 different types of 1200's, a tower model and a all in one keyboard/system unit.

Thanks for the info

It is truly amazing how many different opinions you all have! Everyone seems to have completely different ideas about what system I should get.

Every time I read a new post I think I have decided what to go with, that is until I read another post.

I guess I will go look around for A600s?!

O.K. redrumloa, I think your recent response helped me get a handle on things. Now some more questions.

1. So if I got an A500 what kind of modificaitons or add ons would I want? Can I play all those 2d games, thalion games like lionheart, without any mods to the A500?

2. Since the A500 won't work with VGA does that mean I need a special Amiga/Commodore brand monitor?

3. If I get an A3000 will it work with my NTSC 19" PC monitor?

4. Lastly,  where can I get an A3000 and how much should I pay? I only saw one on ebay?

thanks

Glenn

Thanks again redrumload,

looks like I will probably just wait around for a 3000, since then I could use my existing 19".

I dont have the cash now for it, unless I can find one for super cheap. Next month, after the 15 I will be looking to by one for sure.

thanks again to everyone for all the overwhelming support, help, info, etc.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting.

SO what resolution would the A500 run when using an RF unit on a tv? What about color display?

Also what's the largest size monitor I could get for the A500 without spending a fortune?

An A3000 sounds cool but I dont want to spend too much cash. How much would I have to spend?

Also from what I have seen the A3000 is really hard to find.

I am now leaning more towards an A500, especially since I am only looking for old school/classic 2D games.

well I definitely have been having a hard time finding some of the games I want.

Looking on ebay was difficult too since I dont know exactly what to look for.

If you anyone could throw out some suggestions for cool 2D Amiga games, which are somewhat attainable I would appreciate it.

So what's the deal with running a hard drive on a A500? What would I need to do this?

Also are floppys that hard to get? If so a hard drive would definitely be a must.
