Amiga mouse problem and bootdelay [solved]
« on: July 25, 2006, 09:36:47 AM »
Hi,

after a long time and several times putting my A3000T with CSPPC and CVPPC into parts it is now working stable again :-)

I've have had the problem that it crashes very often and sometimes doesn't boot at all. When I opened the case and pressed the CVPPC into the CSPPC, it worked again for a while.

At the begin of the year I had resoldered the connector of the CSPPC to the motherboard and the 68060 socket and it had worked for a few month without problems. But than it started again to run flakely. Now I found the cause for this problem: The 060 cpu didn't fitted good enough in the socket, i.e. I had to press the cpu hard into the socket and now it works again.

Now to the problems that still remain:
As a result of the system crashes, my harddisk won't boot anymore. The system partition was destroyed ("DHO:???"). Using a recovery tool I was able to recover the whole data from that partition but I wasn't able to get it to boot again. Now I have reformated the partition (switching the filesystem to SFS) and copied everything back to that drive and now it boots again ... but after the system starts it detects the harddisk and the bootpartition and then it waits for nearly a minute before it continues booting. Has anybody an idea for the cause of this bootdelay? Previously it has worked without any timeout like this and has booted in just 20-25 seconds and I've found no "bootdelay"-option in the early-startup-menu of the CSPPC.

The second problem is the mousepointer. After a while of running (i.e. after the system has heated up) the mousepointer starts to get "jumpy". It still follows my mousemovements but the pointer doesn't move from pixel to pixel -- it does 8-pixel-jumps !? The density of the mouse stays as before, i.e. the way I have to roll the mouse to move the mousepointer from the top of the screen to the bottom doesn't change but the mousepointer jumps 8 pixels per move. It's not very easy to work with such a system :-(

Does anybody has an idea for the cause of this problem? I've thought about Paula or an CIA but my newest idea is a problem with the CVPPC. Maybe some kind of sprite-hardware of the permedia-chip is overheating (of cause I have added a cooler to the chip, but just a passive one, the termal position of the CVPPC in an A3000T is not the best and there is no space for active cooling)?

Thanks in advance, Noster

Hi,

noone has an idea? The bootdelay is very annoying (I've bought a KickflashOS4 last year to speed up boot time -- and it has speeded up the boot time a lot -- and now I have a delay of 45 seconds :-()

Hi,

I have solved the boot-problem and hopefully the mouse-problem too:

The mouse-problem seemed to be a heat-related problem, it always occurs after the Amiga has run for about half an hour. The cause seemed to be my ColorMaster24 framebuffer device used for video. It is mounted to the Denise-socket and has no proper hold. Now I have removed this part because I could purchase a FrameMachine with Prism24 via eBay :-). This fits into a Zorro-port and is much better.

The problem with the boot-delay is somehow mystic. I have tested three different UW-SCSI cables and always have had the problem with the delay. Now I use an U160 cable and it works !? No more delay at boot-time. Does anybody has an idea, what the hell is going on? I double checked it: An UW-SCSI cable produces a boot delay of 45 seconds, an U160 cable has no delay.

How ever, my Amiga is running fast again and I'm happy :-D. I hope I don't get in any further problems the next time: I have no time to screw up my Amiga again and again. I need it in working condition.

So long, Noster
